Fan Tan Bets games can vary slightly on the available wagers. However, the following wagers are generally offered on most tables:
- Fan – Bet on a single number. The winning number pays 3:1 before the commission and 2.85:1 after. Fan features a 3.75% house edge.
- Kwok – Bet on two numbers. The winning number pays 1:1 before the commission and 19:20 after. Kwok features a 2.50% house edge.
- Nga Tan – Bet on three numbers, one of which would be a push. The winning numbers pay 2:1 before the commission and 19:40 after. Nga Tan features a 1.25% house edge.
- Nim – Bet on two numbers, one of which would be a push. The winning number pays 2:1 before the commission and 1.9:1 after. Nim features a 2.50% house edge.
- Sheh-Sam-Hong – Bet on three numbers. The winning numbers pay 1:3 before the commission and 19:60 after. Sheh-Sam-Hong features a 1.25% house edge.
Again, each bet is based on how many buttons are in the final group. If you wager on 2 and there are 2 buttons in the final group, for example, then you’ll win the bet.
The exception is when one number is designated as a push. Assuming you place a Nga Tan wager where 1 pushes and 2 and 3 win, then you’ll merely receive your money back if 1 wins.
How to Play Fan Tan

- The dealer lifts the plastic dome and, using a cup, takes approximately 50-70 buttons from the pile.
- Players will place bets on how many buttons will be in the last row.
- The dealer lifts the cup and begins using a wand to separate the buttons into groups of 4.
- The number of buttons in the last group (1, 2, 3, or 4) will determine bet results.
- The dealer pays winners, minus a 5% commission on all wins. The commission doesn’t apply to pushes.
